As a foreign kid growing up in the U.S. I had similar experiences. Most people were unfamiliar with my name & couldn't pronounce, both my first and last names, correctly. It's not the exact same experience as the 'Shaniquas' & others that were discussed but that's exactly my point. They don't all have the same experiences either. What makes us each who we are as an individual are all our unique life experiences. I used to have some of these grievances when I was very young but it didn't take long for me to embrace every aspect of myself. I remember the exact moment when I realized: okay, I'm different, in so many ways, but that's okay. I decided to accept it, even as I got the myriad of reactions, some positive but mostly negative from others. When people talk about being passed over, I've actually seen it happen. People have looked at my name, glazed over & moved my 'file' to the bottom of the stack & called someone else. Maybe they didn't want to be bothered or assumed certain things about who I was based on my name I thought. I had no idea but I told myself it's their problem, not mine. Once I got wise to that happening, I started speaking up for myself & sure enough, most admitted what I'd seen them do even though they didn't know I'd seen them. Usually it's not evil intent, it's often embarrassment for not being able to say the name or a fear of offending by butchering it. Still, you'd think I'd make a fuss when people get it wrong but I don't. I rarely correct people when they say it wrong, unless they ask or struggle & stop. It's not a big deal. In fact, I can often tell immediately how I know someone by how they say my name or what they call me because as I've moved through life, people repeat how others say it & it spreads among that group I'm in: classmates, co-workers, whatever. They correct others for me, thinking they have it right - usually not. I'm sad that so many people have allowed the issues with their unique, unusual or uncommon names to weigh on them. Yes, I said "allowed' because we always have choices in life. I have a lot of friends with similar experiences as me, foreign names. Many have changed their names. I had that option when I became a U.S. citizen but I had no desire to do that. I suppose because of that view, I may be considered insensitive by those with different names, especially when they don't realize I've had similar experiences. I do try to figure things out about a person based on their name, in person or not - where they're from, family background, ethnicity, country of origin... then I actually ask them. I ask a lot of questions because I'm curious by nature & sincerely want to know. Maybe my worse 'offense' as some would see it is I don't abide by name changes. I stick with the name I've always known a person by. It's a lot, in my opinion, to ask someone who's alrelady known you to do. Remembering names is hard enough but to change it & expect compliance is crazy. Their name is part of the person I've gotten to know. That said, I also grew up with a lot of nicknames myself. It's a family thing so I always considered them terms of endearment instead of an attempt to rename me. My parents & siblings who obviously know my name & can say it had & still have nicknames for me. So, it's beyond what we're called. I have not yet seen the film. I had it one DVR but sadly, it was bumped before I watched it & now I can't find it to rent. What I'm saying is based on this RUclips conversation with the filmmaker, Shaniqua, the questions & comments from the audience &, of course, my own experiences. So as I listened to this I felt sorry for those who are obviously emotional about their name BUT I don't think it's about the name at all. We all have issues in our lives & some of us many. Getting over it, whatever the 'it' or they may be, is part of life & how we figure it all out is how we become who we are going to be. So I say GET OVER IT! I'm not saying drop it, ignore it, pretend it doesn't matter to you. I mean deal with it so it's not/no longer such a big issue in your life journey, one that's keeping you stuck. Trust me, there will be other issues in life but when we get stuck on one, we never really get the chance to get to & fully experience, deal with & move past the others. These are all obstacles in our path, we can call them burdens & let them stack up or not. The fact is we have to figure out how to get over, around, through... them to keep going.

@tanishiajohnson9811 A fact is a thing that is known or proved to be true. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated created a centralized headquarters with the establishment of its incorporation in 1913. Our incorporation predates the arrival of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated by 7 years. We operated from a central office from that date. We opened a national office in 1949 to handle our ever-expanding membership but also to allow our professional staff and other non-members space within our building. In 1952, A.K.A. purchased a location and with renovations, the building remains debt-free. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated’s first executive Office was located at 1721 Worm Street. Source: Torchbearers of a Legacy: A History of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., 1920-1997. This was of course also her parent’s home where they continued to live after it was designated an executive office. New Pittsburgh Courier, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania • Sat, Feb 28, 1931Page 8. & National Archives at Washington, DC; Washington, D.C.; Seventeenth Census of the United States, 1950; Year: 1950; Census Place: Houston, Harris, Texas; Roll: 5342; Page: 7; Enumeration District: 263-234A I agree that the accuracy of all brands is of the utmost importance, therefore it is important to be factual in what we share, especially when “sharing a space”. Continued growth and blessings to you as well.
